The LIKE operator in Reporting Services works a little differently than in SQL. You would expect to use a %. Nothing could be further from the truth. So much for consistency.

If you want to use the LIKE operator in, for example, the TABLIX, go to Tablix properties, Filter:

filter_1Under Expression you enter the column in your dataset you want to filter on. Then under Operator you choose LIKE. For the expression (click the Fx button) you enter this expression

= “*” & “tekst” & “*”

Filter LIKE

All records with the word “tekst” are now filtered.

Everything is easy once you know it

Frequently asked questions

How does the LIKE operator work in an SSRS tablix filter?

Differently than in SQL. You expect to use a %, but that does not work. Use * as the wildcard in the expression.

How do I filter an SSRS tablix on part of a text?

Go to Tablix properties, Filter. Choose the column, choose LIKE as the operator and enter via Fx: = "*" & "tekst" & "*". All records with the word tekst remain.

Why does % not work in an SSRS tablix filter with LIKE?

The LIKE operator in Reporting Services works differently than in SQL. You use a * instead of a %.

Where do I set a filter on an SSRS tablix?

Right-click the tablix and choose Tablix properties. Open Filter there. Under Expression you choose the column from your dataset and under Operator you choose LIKE.

Which expression do I use for a LIKE filter on the word tekst in SSRS?

Click the Fx button and enter: = "*" & "tekst" & "*". That filters on all records with that word.
